AI clone videos: how they work, and doing them right in India
This guide is for founders and professionals considering an AI clone for their content, and for marketing teams producing clone content for a spokesperson.
How an AI clone is made
- Consent first. The person agrees in writing to having a clone made and to how it will be used.
- Recording session. A few minutes of well-lit, front-facing video of the person talking naturally, plus clean audio.
- Training. AI models learn the person's appearance, lip movement and voice.
- Scripts. New scripts are written. This is where the content's real value comes from.
- Generation and edit. The clone performs the script, and editors add captions, B-roll, music and pacing.
What people use clones for
- Founder content: weekly LinkedIn and Instagram videos without blocking calendars.
- Doctors and health educators: patient-education reels on sleep, exercise, nutrition and more, at a steady rhythm.
- Coaches and course creators: daily tips, lesson intros and FAQs.
- Sales and onboarding: personalised welcome videos and product walkthroughs.
- Multiple languages: the same message in several languages, in the person's own voice.
What makes a clone look real
- Source recording quality: good light, a steady camera and clean audio matter more than anything else.
- Natural scripts: short sentences written for speaking, not reading.
- Editing: cutaways, B-roll and captions hide the moments that look slightly artificial and keep viewers watching.
- Restraint: keep clones to talking-head formats. Don't make them do things the real person wouldn't.
Consent, labels and Indian law
This section is general information, not legal advice. For regulated sectors, especially healthcare and finance, check with your legal advisor.
Consent and personal data (DPDP Act, 2023)
Your face and voice recordings are personal data. Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, processing should rest on clear, specific consent for a stated purpose. In practice: get written consent from the person being cloned, spell out where and for how long the clone will be used, store the source recordings securely, and delete them when the purpose ends or consent is withdrawn.
AI-content labelling (IT Rules amendments, 2026)
On 10 February 2026, MeitY notified amendments to the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, in force from 20 February 2026. They bring "synthetically generated information", meaning AI-created or AI-altered audio and video that looks authentic, within the rules. Platforms must ensure such content is clearly labelled, visually for video and audibly for audio, and must act fast on unlawful deepfakes. The takedown window for flagged unlawful content is now 3 hours.
For businesses, that means: expect to declare and label clone content when you upload it to major platforms, and never use a clone to impersonate someone or mislead viewers about who is speaking.
Our rules
- We only clone people who have given explicit, informed consent.
- We never clone celebrities, public figures or third parties.
- We follow each platform's AI-disclosure requirements.
